Intel XTU ‘Attempted to install on an unsupported platform’

I was recently wanting to mess around with the CPU clocks on my laptop which is a Surface Book 2 using Intel Extreme Tuning Utility, but whenever I tried to install it I was greeted by an error dialogue that said ‘Attempted to install on an unsupported platform’. This is how I fixed it…

  1. Download the official Intel XTU
  2. Open it until you get to the error but do not close it
  3. Open File Explorer to ‘C:\ProgramData\Package Cache’ and search for ‘xtu’ look for something named ‘Intel_XtuInstaller.msi’, ‘XTUInstaller.msi’ or something similar
  4. Copy it to a safe place (ie. your Desktop or Documents)
  5. Open CMD to the directory you copied the .msi file to (You can type cmd in the address bar to do this automatically) and type in msiexec /i Intel_XtuInstaller.msi DISABLEPLATFORMCHECK=1
  6. You have to restart your laptop otherwise you will get an error along the lines of ‘the drivers are not present’ (trust me I’ve tried)

Thanks for reading!
Steve.

If the message that pops up is also "Attempted to install on an unsupported platform" maybe try following the instructions and seeing if the installer has an uninstall option.

I know I'm late but if you use the installer again then it will give you the option to uninstall if you still have this issue

After i typed the command it says : This installation package could not be opened. Verify that the package exists and that you can access it, or contact the application vendor to verify that this is a valid Windows Installer package.

What do i do?

What was the name of the file you copied; you may need to replace Intel_XtuInstaller.msi in the command with whatever it was called.

Leave it in C/Users/Robert ( example of computer name ) and it should work .

After i install and try to launch xtu it says: unable to start i XTU because the drivers are not present. install the latest version of intel. I have a i5-1135g7 laptop i think the driver doesnt support this gen.
Or do i have to copy/cut it ? And leave it on desktop or delete it after it's installed?

Does it work on a Laptop GPU? The intel UHD. I probably think it won't

I used my Surface Book 2 laptop when I wrote the article.

It seems Intel have no only broken the link to the download but may have also 'patched' this workaround.
Here's the link to XTU on archive.org from around the time I wrote this article https://web.archive.org/web...

I recommend attempting the article before trying the old version of XTU though.

Sorry, I'm too busy to test and edit the article at the moment.

I'm running on a problem here. When i try to run the program, it says "unable to start, try closing another tuning application." and I don't have another tuning utility. Uninstallation might fix it?

You might have to show hidden files, or type it in the address bar of explorer

I do not recommend doing same on older laptops like mine. I copied file to desktop and run it from there, it did finish and then system asked me to restart and so did I, but after checking it out, I saw that it doesn't give any info other than CPU Utilization.

Works to install, but for me the app never opens. Acts like it’s going start and the taskbar icons appears but then disappears when I hover over it (the bottom right icons). No error message appears.
Any ideas? Is there a disable platform check when running the app?
CPU is i7 7700, running in a HP Elitedesk 800 G3 Mini.

Nah the method in this post only works on the installer, AFAIK there isn't a platform check when running the app but it kinda sounds like it's just crashing instead.
Maybe open up event viewer and see if there's any errors.
